An all-India survey on consumer expenditure, employment and unemployment was
carried out by National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) during the period
July 1993 to June 1994. In view of the fact that the Planning Commission was
actually engaged in various exercises required for formulation of the Ninth
Five-Year Plan, it was decided to accord high priority to tabulation of data
from this survey. A summary Report giving Household Consumer Expenditure
Patterns for all-India and for major States was brought out in March 1996. A
second Report giving detailed tables for each State and U.T. of India on
breakdown of the given expenditure by commodity groups, etc. has also been
