Epidemic Control Cell
Functions:
- Monitoring and control of water borne Diseases.
- Monitoring of Meningitis, Encephalitis, Sunstroke and Food poisoning cases.
- Implementation of National Guineaworm Eradication Programme.
- Yaws Eradication Programme.
- National Surveillance Programme For Communicable Diseases.
- Action in case of natural calamities.
National Guineaworm Eradication Programme
The success in this programme is really outstanding. There was rapid decline in endemicity with no indigenous case since last Ten years (1991).
The country has been certified as Guineaworm disease free by the International Commission for certification of Dracunculiasis Eradication (ICCDE) on 5th February 2000.
Yaws Eradication Programme
Only two districts Chandrapur and Gadchiroli are known to have Yaws cases.
Six search are carried out since 1998. Total 2062 suspected cases are found but only 46 cases in 1998 and only 1 case in 2000 are confirmed.
- There is marked reduction in Yaws cases.
- Sero surveillance is recommended by GOI (NICD) to find out maximum hidden cases.
Disease Surveillance Programme
The Disease Surveillance Cell has been established in the office of the Jt. Director of Health Services (Health) Pune. NSPCD (National Surveillance Programme For Communicable Diseases) was initiated in the year 1997-98 for Strengthening of Diseases Surveillance System to respond to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases
In Maharashtra 3 districts viz. Satara, Dhule and Sindhudurg were identified in 1997-98 and 2 districts viz Beed and Chandrapur are identified in 2002 under
NSPCD.
10 Districts are identified for the year 2000-2001 under Maharashtra Health System Development Project.
Another 10 districts are added for the year 2002-2003 under MSHDP for strengthening of disease
survieillance.
Under the programme following activities are carried out.
- Training of medical and paramedical workers.
- Strengthening of communication.
- Improving surveillance system.
- Strengthening of laboratory services.
