About the India Water Portal

The India Water Portal is an open, inclusive, web-based platform for sharing water management knowledge amongst practitioners and the general public. It aims to draw on the rich experience of water-sector experts, package their knowledge and add value to it through technology and then disseminate it to a larger audience through the internet.

We see the knowledge asymmetry amongst stakeholders of the water sector as a critical factor hampering the sustainable management of our water resources. The Portal seeks to address this asymmetry by sharing best practices, advocating sustainable approaches, bringing transparency of public data and information, and by spreading awareness.

The ultimate objective of the Portal is to address equity and sustainability issues in the Water Sector. Therefore, we are actively pursuing alternate outreach methods like print media, radio and workshops, to ensure this knowledge reaches those on the ground who need it most. We believe that the India Water Portal has the potential to catalyse change on a large-scale by this sharing of knowledge leading to improved practices and informed debates.

The Water Portal grew out of the felt need for a single location pulling together various resources in the area of water. This was one of the themes that came out of the First Arghyam conference held in February 2005. The National Knowledge Commission ( http://www.knowledgecommission.gov.in) has been a strong proponent of the idea of knowledge portals in various areas, including water. NKC has been a strong supporter in the creation of the water portal, creating regional language water portals, and working with government departments related to water.

The Portal is a voluntary effort being coordinated by Arghyam, a non-profit trust that works in the area of water. More information about Arghyam is at www.arghyam.org. The Water Portal is created in a spirit of sharing and openness by a wide range of partners including technical water experts, research institutes, NGOs, Government departments, historians and hydrogeologists, IT specialists, educators and others.

भारत के जल भण्डार तेजी से सिकुड़ रहे हैं…नासा की एक रिपोर्ट

अमेरिकी संस्था नासा ने चिंताजनक शोध जारी किया है. शोध यह है कि पिछले एक दशक के दौरान समूचे उत्तर भारत में हर साल औसतन भूजल स्तर एक फुट नीचे गिरा है. इस शोध का चिंताजनक पहलू यह तो है कि भूजल स्तर गिरा है लेकिन उससे अधिक चिंताजनक पहलू यह है कि इसके लिए सामान्य मानवीय गतिविधियों को जिम्मेदार बताया जा रहा है.

13 अगस्त 2009 को प्रकाशित “नेचर” पत्रिका के Vol.460 की एक रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक उपग्रह आधारित चित्रों से पता चला है कि भारत के जल स्रोत और भण्डार तेजी से सिकुड़ रहे हैं और जल्दी ही किसानों को परम्परागत सिंचाई के तरीके छोड़कर पानी की खपत कम रखने वाले आधुनिक तरीके और फ़सलें अपनानी होंगी। भारत में अस्थाई उपलब्धता भविष्य में खेती पर गम्भीर असर डालने वाली है और एक भीषण जल संकट की आहट सुनाई�दे रही है . . . मुज़फ्फरनगर 7 जुलाई, 09।�उत्तराखण्ड राज्य सरकार ने अपने 19 जून, 2008 के आदेश में अपनी भैरों घाटी तथा पाला-मनेरी जल-ऊर्जा परियोजनाओं पर तात्कालिक प्रभाव से कार्य रोक देने की और गंगोत्री से उत्तरकाशी तक भागीरथी गंगा जी के संरक्षण के प्रति पूर्ण प्रतिबद्धता की बात कही थी पर योजनाओं पर (विशेषतया पाला-मनेरी परियोजना पर) विनाशकारी कार्य भयावह गति पकड़ रहे हैं और उक्त आदेश कोरी धोखाधडी का रुप ले माँ गंगा जी की और हमारी खिल्ली उड़ा रहे हैं।�
