The Anganwadi, literally the courtyard play centre, is a childcare centre, located within the village or the slum area itself. Anganwadi is the focal point for the delivery of services at the community level, to children below six years of age, pregnant and nursing mothers, and adolescent girls. Anganwadi centre also serves as the meeting place for women's groups, mothers' clubs and mahila mandals promoting awareness and joint action for child development and women's empowerment.

Anganwadi is the center for the holistic development on women and children.

In Maharashtra State, 63,113 Anganwadi Centers are functioning in 372 projects.
